Guide Dogs Victoria has unveiled a new, specially-designed kitchen aimed at enhancing the independence of individuals with blindness or low vision. This initiative has received a significant endorsement from renowned Australian chef Curtis Stone.
The kitchen is equipped with innovative tools and resources that focus on fostering confidence and practical cooking skills for its users. Maria Hamilton, a participant, has expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Talking weighing machines and specialised gloves to prevent burns have truly expanded my horizons.”
Adding to the kitchen’s uniqueness, occupational therapist Kerryn Bousfield highlighted the importance of safety while using the kitchen’s advanced equipment. She emphasised that being organised is crucial, advising participants to be familiar with the layout of the kitchen.
Curtis Stone, a Michelin-starred chef, visited the kitchen and was inspired by the participants. “I feel like I’m learning more here than I could ever teach,” he remarked, praising the dedication and skill of those involved.
As an ambassador for Coles, Stone contributed to this cause through a recent fundraising campaign, where five cents from every pet food sale over the past month was donated to Guide Dogs Victoria. This effort has successfully raised $300,000, aimed at supporting the training and breeding of guide dogs that play a transformative role in the lives of many. Stone remarked on the impact this will have, stating, “These beautiful animals will change people’s lives.”
