Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick has dismissed rumours that promising defender Sam Flanders could be traded during the upcoming trade period, attributing his underwhelming performance in 2025 to an ongoing back injury. Despite reports suggesting interest from clubs like St Kilda, Collingwood, and Carlton, Hardwick insists that Flanders, who is contracted until the end of 2027, is not available for trade.

Following a breakout season in 2024, where Flanders averaged 31 disposals, his form significantly declined this year, with an average of only 18.7 disposals per game. This drop is partly due to the competition for spots after the arrivals of players Dan Rioli and John Noble. Hardwick emphasised Flanders’ toughness and commitment, noting that he played through pain that likely should have sidelined him for a number of games.

After the Suns’ elimination from the finals, Hardwick reflected on the team’s performance against Brisbane, stating that they struggled to compete and make the necessary plays at critical moments. He highlighted a gap between his young side and teams that consistently reach the finals. While acknowledging the disappointment of the season’s conclusion, Hardwick also expressed optimism about the team’s potential for future success.

He noted the importance of evolving as a club and the need to transition from being a good side to a great one. Hardwick reiterated his belief in the developing talents within the squad but recognised the challenges ahead, especially the leap from being a top-six team to a top-four contender.

With a focus on improving their list and performance in the coming months, Hardwick is cautious about potential new signings, particularly in reference to Carlton’s contracted player Charlie Curnow. He indicated that while they are looking to bolster their roster, there are no immediate plans to disrupt the team by trading away key players.

Overall, while Hardwick acknowledges the difficult end to the season, he remains positive and committed to building a stronger team for future finals, expressing confidence that they can succeed in September moving forward.
