The recent hike in alcohol excise duty, often referred to as the “beer tax”, has once again increased the price of a pint in Australia. These regular tax increases occur every February and August and are aligned with inflation rates, prompting industry leaders to urge the government for relief. They argue that the ongoing rises are making a pint unaffordable for many Australians.
However, new findings from Finder indicate that Australia does not rank among the world’s most expensive countries for beer. The research assessed the average cost of a pint in the largest cities of various nations, with Sydney representing Australia’s figures. It was found that the average price for a pint in Sydney is around $11, placing it at 21st position globally.
This suggests that while Australians are feeling the impact of increasing beer taxes, the country’s prices are still relatively modest compared to many others worldwide.
