A recent survey reveals that 75% of Australians anticipate that the rising cost of living will influence their holiday choices in 2025, with a resurgence in interest for traditional caravan trips. Katheryn McClunie, alongside her son Leo, embodies this trend as they seek budget-friendly holiday options. She opted to rent a caravan from someone not currently using it, marking her first camping experience.
According to Camplify’s chief marketing officer, Alastair McCausland, the vast majority of caravan rentals are available for under $200 per day, with approximately a third costing less than $100. Even when factoring in additional expenses like campsite fees, fuel, and insurance, a day’s outing can be achieved for about $300, making it cost-effective for families of four or five.
The caravan revival comes as Australian tourism adapts post-pandemic; while hotel spending has increased by 12%, campsite expenditure has risen by 21%, as per Commonwealth Bank reports. The average cost for a powered campsite is now around $71.53 per night. Big4 Holiday Parks’ chief executive, Sean Jenner, notes that the number of caravans on Australian roads has grown by 150,000 since before COVID, providing ample opportunity for families to explore the great outdoors affordably.
