Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic has emphasised the urgency for his team to elevate their performance in the remaining two matches of the third round of FIFA World Cup AFC Asian qualifying, with an automatic qualification spot at stake. Although Australia secured a 2-0 victory over China PR, Japan’s unexpected draw with Saudi Arabia has complicated their route to a sixth consecutive World Cup appearance.
Currently, the Socceroos hold second place in Group C, having three points clear of Saudi Arabia, following their solid win in Hangzhou and a prior 5-1 triumph against Indonesia. As they prepare for their critical matches against Japan and Saudi Arabia in June, Popovic has made it clear that the team must secure at least four points—either through two wins or a win and a draw—to guarantee a second-place finish in their group. Japan has already clinched the top spot in Group C.
Reflecting on the team’s journey, Popovic noted that the Socceroos started the third round in a commanding position and aims to maintain that momentum. Despite facing tough competition, he expressed confidence in the players’ ability to perform under pressure, acknowledging their improved display against China compared to previous matches.
The upcoming showdown against Japan at Perth Stadium on 5 June will be significant, and Popovic described it as a special encounter. However, he is keen to see even better performance levels from his squad to secure the necessary points. Only the top two teams from each group qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup, which will expand to include 48 teams, allowing for more opportunities via playoffs.
Should the Socceroos finish third, they will still have chances for qualification, with provisions for four AFC teams to participate in playoffs. As the team gears up for these crucial fixtures, the focus remains firmly on achieving the needed outcomes to secure their spot on the world stage.
