Queensland faces a critical decision as they prepare for game two of the State of Origin series, contemplating the inclusion of fiery Canberra player Corey Horsburgh to shift the momentum in their favour. New South Wales displayed a lacklustre performance, yet they prevailed, marking Queensland’s second consecutive defeat at Suncorp Stadium—their first back-to-back losses there since 1998—and their fourth defeat out of the last five encounters with the Blues.

The Maroons have been urged to inject more aggression into their game, and Horsburgh, known for his fiery approach, could be just what they need. While his history of losing control on the field could be a risk, New South Wales may find solace if Queensland maintains their “pick and stick” strategy by overlooking Horsburgh for game one.

Additionally, coach Billy Slater might want to reassess Kayln Ponga’s position due to his underwhelming performances this season. Moving Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, noted for his elusiveness, to the fullback position could provide a fresh attacking dynamic, particularly since he was not effectively utilised in the previous clash against the Blues.

Ponga has struggled to find form, and his recent performances at club level have been uninspiring, largely attributed to Newcastle’s inconsistent attack. In the elite setting of State of Origin, Ponga failed to make a significant impact, and Queensland’s captain, Daly Cherry-Evans, also underperformed, leading to speculation that he may have reached the end of his time in the Origin arena.

Overall, the Maroons are facing a dire situation, as losing game one at home puts them under immense pressure. Adopting a strategy that includes sweeping changes seems to be their only chance of turning the series around and reclaiming their competitive edge.
