The State of Origin series is set to commence on Wednesday night, often showcasing players at their peak, but it’s also a stage where some athletes struggle under pressure. This year, several key players face significant scrutiny as they head into the first game at Suncorp Stadium, whether due to lacklustre performances at the club level or limited experience in representative matches.

Kalyn Ponga, currently grappling with poor form in a struggling Knights team, leads the list. With the highest number of handling errors in the NRL this season, he must improve his game, especially under the relentless attack from the Blues’ Nathan Cleary and Mitchell Moses.

Spencer Leniu, known for his fierce playing style, will be on the receiving end of the Maroons’ psychological tactics as the Queensland crowd seeks to provoke him when he enters from the bench. His temperament is a point of concern for selectors.

Rookie Robert Toia has shown promise but is stepping into intense circumstances with only ten NRL games under his belt. The fast pace and high stakes of Origin may overwhelm even seasoned players, placing extra pressure on the young talent.

Angus Crichton, despite being a standout player, leads the league in penalties conceded this year. His volatile nature makes him a target for the Maroons, who will likely exploit this through minor provocations in a heated matchup.

Reuben Cotter, despite being well-regarded within the Maroons squad, has struggled to maintain his energetic form this season. His performance has dipped compared to previous years; notably, he’s broken far fewer tackles this season, which dilutes his impact on the field.

Finally, Liam Martin has faltered alongside other Panthers teammates, lacking the defensive intensity that characterised his previous seasons. His 41 missed tackles thus far this season — one of the highest rates in the league — raises concerns about his ability to keep pace with the attacking speed of the Maroons.

As the series opens, these six players are undoubtedly under pressure to perform, converting potential pitfalls into opportunities for redemption in front of a passionate audience.
