LAS VEGAS: Joseph Tapine has made it clear that he’ll focus on leading by example rather than through words, following an impressive debut as captain in the Raiders’ unexpected 30-8 victory over the Warriors.

Showcasing his strength on the field, Tapine outperformed all other middle forwards, making significant metres to propel his team to triumph. His appointment as captain by coach Ricky Stuart came after the departure of Elliott Whitehead, making this win particularly significant for the Kiwi player.

Reflecting on the momentous occasion, Tapine shared with Wide World of Sports, “It was a huge game for the team being here in Vegas, and my first as captain. I’m not much of a talker; I tend to lead through my actions.”

He expressed satisfaction with his performance, acknowledging the Warriors’ formidable pack and the importance of unity in achieving a hard-fought win. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to play here, and winning made it even more special, especially with my family present.”

While a two-match suspension due to a shoulder charge cast a slight shadow over his celebrations, Tapine’s spirits remained high. The victory was a surprise, given that many bookmakers had tipped the Raiders as likely wooden spoon contenders. However, Stuart is urging caution despite the early success, reminding everyone that it’s just the beginning of the season. “I’m so proud, but we need to stay grounded after such an incredible week,” he remarked.

This remarkable start to Tapine’s captaincy not only highlights his potential leadership but also sets a promising tone for the Raiders as they navigate the challenges of the NRL season.
