Max King’s journey to earning his sky blue jumper in State of Origin is one filled with incredible resilience and determination. The 28-year-old prop has faced significant health challenges, overcoming three heart surgeries to continue his rugby league career.

Initially, King’s promising career was jeopardised by a rare heart condition known as supraventricular tachycardia, which he developed while playing SG Ball for the Newcastle Knights. His father, David, a former first-grade player himself, recounted the fear they faced during that time, stating, “He thought he was having heart attacks.” King’s heart would spasm during physical exertion, causing his heart rate to soar to 230 beats per minute, leaving him on the verge of collapse. After undergoing surgery in 2016 to correct the condition, the issue returned, leading to two further surgeries, including one by Australia’s leading heart surgeon in Melbourne, which ultimately resolved the problem.

However, King’s struggles were far from over. He subsequently faced another serious issue, a painful bone growth under his Achilles tendon. Doctors informed him of a bleak prognosis, with a one in four chance that he might never play rugby league again. After a difficult spell that nearly ended his career during his time at the Melbourne Storm, King returned home to the Hunter region, grappling with the potential of being medically retired. Fortuitously, after a period of rest, he recovered just in time for an opportunity at the Bulldogs under coach Trent Barrett, who had once tried to sign him at Manly.

Despite being offered a contract with the Bulldogs that included a clause allowing for dismissal after six games, King persevered and successfully reclaimed his place in the sport. His journey is a testament to his tenacity, and the family’s long rugby league heritage adds even more significance to his achievements. Kings’ great-grandfather Cec played for the Rabbitohs in the 1940s, while his grandfather Johnny was a legend for the Dragons, boasting seven grand final victories in the 1950s and 60s. David himself played for the Gold Coast before moving to England, where Max was born.

As King prepares to represent New South Wales, his family is filled with pride and excitement. David expressed the deep-rooted passion for rugby within their family, emphasising that this moment is a pinnacle for them all. With flights booked to support him, they are ready to cheer for their beloved Max as he battles on the State of Origin stage, embodying the heart and spirit of rugby league.
