The Mole: Cowboys Confront ‘Harder’ Season Following the Departure of Key Players

The Cowboys exceeded expectations last season, despite predictions placing them near the bottom of the ladder. They reached the finals but were eliminated in the second week. However, this year poses new challenges as they have lost three key backs: Valentine Holmes, Chad Townsend, and Kyle Feldt, with no major signings to fill these gaps.

Retaining talented fullback Scott Drinkwater, who excelled with the second-most try assists in the league last season, offers some hope. If Drinkwater can remain injury-free, he could help generate scoring opportunities. The team’s success will heavily depend on the new halves combination of Tom Dearden and Jake Clifford, especially with Townsend’s departure. Dearden is a promising player, but Clifford must address inconsistencies in his performance. Competition for spots will be fierce, with players like Jaxon Purdue and Tom Duffy pushing for a place in the squad.

While scoring wasn’t a significant issue in the previous season, defence proved to be the Cowboys’ Achilles’ heel, highlighted by a poor points differential attributed to heavy losses. The forward pack has been strengthened by the addition of experienced players Karl Lawton, Kai O’Donnell, and John Bateman, which should help bolster both defence and attack. Bateman is regarded as a skilled veteran who will add value to the team.

Co-captain Reuben Cotter is set to lead with his work ethic and commitment, inspiring the forward line. However, the team’s performance will hinge on whether this revamped backline can maintain its previous scoring prowess after losing Holmes and Feldt.

In terms of additions and departures for 2025, the Cowboys have welcomed several players while saying goodbye to some notable names, including Holmes and Feldt. The best acquisition appears to be Bateman, who has a track record of success.

This season is crucial for Reece Robson, who needs to demonstrate his dedication to the Cowboys, especially as he has signed a lucrative deal with the Roosters starting in 2026. As the season unfolds, a key question looms: can the Cowboys still retain their offensive firepower without their star try-scorers?

For the upcoming season, the Cowboys are predicted to finish seventh, with an anticipated line-up that includes Drinkwater, Dearden, and Clifford among others. Bet odds for them to win the championship are currently at $26, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding their performance this year.
