Gehamat Shibasaki’s rise in rugby league is a testament to perseverance and personal choices that shaped his career path. Had it not been for the birth of his child, Shibasaki might have continued playing rugby union in Japan and missed out on his current success in the NRL.

Townsville Blackhawks coach, Terry Campese, shared how Shibasaki’s journey unfolded. After playing in Japan in 2022, Shibasaki faced a setback when the Cowboys released him. Though he had a promising opportunity to return to Japan, he and his wife decided to stay in Townsville to raise their newborn. This decision proved fortuitous, as he excelled with the Blackhawks and had a brief stint with Souths in the NRL, albeit with limited opportunities.

After playing only three NRL games across two clubs in 2023 and 2024, Shibasaki boldly pursued a spot with the Brisbane Broncos. Initially on a weekly training and trial deal, his chances seemed slim to secure a long-term contract with a star-studded backline. However, Broncos coach Michael Maguire recognised Shibasaki’s dedication and potential, expressing surprise at how quickly he progressed.

Maguire acknowledged that he was initially unfamiliar with Shibasaki, who has Torres Strait Islander, Japanese, and Palauan heritage, but noted the positive feedback from teammates who had played alongside him in juniors, like Patty Carrigan. Shibasaki’s hard work, commitment to improvement, and the support from his peers ultimately won him a place in the team.

Campese, reflecting on Shibasaki’s remarkable journey, expressed immense pride in seeing his former player ready to take the field in the Origin decider. He celebrated Shibasaki’s achievements, calling his story one of the great success tales in the sport, a testament to hard work and the triumph of the human spirit. As the anticipation builds for Shibasaki’s upcoming appearance, both Campese and the rugby league community look forward to his performance, recognising that he has earned his place through determination and resilience.
