At the Sydney Adaptive Boardriders Club, individuals with disabilities, including those who are blind, use wheelchairs, or have lost limbs, are embracing the thrill of surfing. In just a few months, the club’s membership has skyrocketed from four to an impressive 120 members, all riding the innovative mechanically generated waves at Sydney’s Urbansurf complex.

Chris Astill, the club president, highlighted the profound impact surfing has on participants. He noted the visible transformation in their demeanor after hitting the water, describing a transition that allows them to momentarily forget their disabilities. For many, including those who rely on wheelchairs or crutches, the experience of surfing offers a unique escape. As one member put it, “Out there, all of that falls away, and it’s just you and the waves.”

Among the inspiring figures associated with the club is six-time adaptive surfing world champion Mark ‘Mono’ Stewart. After losing his leg to cancer fifty years ago, Mark has passionately advocated for inclusivity in the surf. He recalled his early surfing days, where he developed a nickname that alluded to his prosthetic leg. Mark finds surfing to be a great equaliser, emphasising that in the ocean, people often don’t notice his disability.

The community spirit is evident as the club actively participates in various causes, such as supporting SurFebruary, an initiative to raise funds for the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse cancer hospital in Sydney. This effort illustrates not only the inclusiveness of the club but also its commitment to giving back to the community.

The Sydney Adaptive Boardriders Club is more than just a surf club; it’s a space where individuals can feel liberated and empowered, allowing them to connect with nature and with each other, regardless of their physical challenges. This unique environment encourages everyone to experience the joy of surfing, reinforcing the notion that the ocean is a welcoming place for all.
