Tropical Cyclone Alfred continues its slow drift southward off the coast of Far North Queensland, nearly a week after its formation. As at 2:30 PM AEST, it was located approximately 930km away from Mackay, with its future path yet to be determined.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has indicated that various factors could influence the cyclone’s trajectory. Senior meteorologist Dean Narramore noted that there is significant atmospheric activity around the system, which appears well-organised and conducive to further development. According to the BoM’s models, there are three primary scenarios outlining potential paths for Alfred. One possibility involves a high-pressure system over New South Wales that may direct the cyclone towards Queensland, increasing wind and rainfall along the coast. Alternatively, the cyclone could travel parallel to the coast, or it may be drawn away from Queensland by an upper-level trough.

Although still a considerable distance from land, Tropical Cyclone Alfred is expected to bring gusty winds and isolated showers to coastal areas ranging from Hamilton Island to the New South Wales border. Over the coming days, as the cyclone progresses southward, it could generate large sea swells and lead to tides that exceed usual astronomical levels along the coast.

Residents in Queensland are urged to stay informed about the latest updates and forecasts, as the BoM will continue to publish tracking maps on a six-hourly basis.
