A groundbreaking MRI machine now operational at Liverpool Hospital in Sydney’s south-west is transforming cancer treatment by employing a technique known as cryoablation, which allows tumours to be frozen rather than surgically removed. This innovative approach involves inserting a gas-powered needle into a tumour, creating an iceball that effectively destroys the cancerous tissue.

Patients undergoing this procedure can enjoy the convenience of being discharged on the same day, significantly speeding up recovery compared to traditional invasive surgeries. Dr Glenn Schlaphoff highlighted the precision of this method, stating that the freezing process efficiently eliminates tumours.

An illustrative case is that of 64-year-old Josephine Cordina, a grandmother who suffered intense pain from a nine-millimetre spinal tumour. Despite being presented with the option of a complex surgical operation involving the removal of the tumour and installation of screws to support her spine, Cordina opted for the less invasive cryoablation technique. She reported remarkable improvement the very next day, with her pain entirely alleviated, allowing her to return to her normal activities.

This revolutionary MRI machine is the first of its kind in Australia and has broader applications, potentially treating soft tissue tumours in the liver and kidneys as well. The introduction of this technology is part of a significant redevelopment plan for Liverpool Hospital, aimed at modernising medical facilities to meet the needs of Sydney’s rapidly growing south-western population. The hospital’s overhaul is part of a nearly $1 billion investment, which will also include a new cancer centre scheduled for completion in 2027, as noted by Health Minister Ryan Park. This substantial upgrade seeks to improve healthcare offerings in the region substantially, making advanced treatment more accessible for patients.
