The Compassion of Strangers: A Nurse Noticed My Tears and Offered a Hug

In 2024, at the age of 34, I received an unexpected leukaemia diagnosis. I was symptomless and living what I deemed a normal life, preparing for an exciting trip to New Zealand for a music show. To be prudent, I decided to get a blood test to check my iron levels before my departure. However, just six hours later, my doctor called with alarming news. My bloodwork revealed I was neutropenic, indicating a dangerously low immune system, and needed to be hospitalised immediately.

I found this shocking, especially since I had been actively socialising just the day before. Undergoing various precautions, including wearing two masks, felt excessive to me, but the reality hit hard when I realised the gravity of my condition. Upon entering the hospital, I would spend the next six weeks away from the world.

That night, I learnt I had cancer, a staggering blow delivered by a haematologist in the emergency department. My family, though supportive, were distant at that moment, leaving me to grapple with the news and its implications largely alone. A friend had come to assist with medical terms, but as I lay in bed at 3am, the overwhelming reality sunk in that not only was I not making my flight to New Zealand, but I was also facing a life-threatening illness – one that often claims the lives of characters in movies. I wished for writers to portray a more hopeful narrative; many survive, and I wanted to be one of them.

In a moment of despair, a nurse named Ben noticed my tears and approached me. When he asked if I wanted a hug, I realised how much I genuinely needed that support. His kindness during such a terrifying time felt monumental.

That night became the most frightening in my battle with cancer. Today, I am in remission, yet I often reflect on Ben’s compassionate act, which brought me comfort during my darkest hours. His kindness not merely aided my spirits during those six weeks in hospital but continues to resonate with me throughout my following months of chemotherapy.

These moments of connection with others, particularly with strangers, are profound and can significantly impact our lives. What’s the kindest thing a stranger has ever done for you?
