After a lengthy 11-year wait for answers, the families of those aboard the ill-fated MH370 flight are experiencing renewed optimism as a new search begins in the Indian Ocean. The US and UK company Ocean Infinity has deployed its vessel, the Armada, from Mauritius to the suspected crash site, located about 1500 kilometres west of Perth.

Aviation expert Geoff Thomas emphasised the significance of this new search as a means to provide closure for the affected families. Six Australians were on board the Malaysia Airlines flight that disappeared on March 8, 2014; among them was father Paul Weeks. His widow, Danica, has vowed to continue seeking the truth, stating that the uncertainty lingers heavily.

The search will target a specific area 30 kilometres from previous search efforts, thanks to advancements made by UK aerospace engineer Richard Godfrey, who has created an innovative tracking system utilising amateur radio waves. Thomas expressed confidence in the potential success of this mission.

Ocean Infinity has proposed a “no find, no fee” contract with the Malaysian government, asking for $70 million if the search yields results. Although the contract remains unsigned, the search is proceeding, amid claims that Malaysian authorities may be reluctant to uncover the aircraft’s secrets. The search area encompasses approximately 15,000 square kilometres, with the vessel expected to arrive soon.
