Corey Parker, a respected figure in Queensland’s State of Origin history, is urging Maroons forward Tino Fa’asuamaleaui to elevate his game significantly for the deciding match against New South Wales at Accor Stadium. Parker highlighted that Fa’asuamaleaui has not yet showcased his full potential in this series, emphasising that this performance is crucial for both his individual success and the team’s outcome.
In the first two games, Queensland’s middle forwards struggled, particularly in their battle against a dominant NSW pack led by Payne Haas. Parker is keen for all forwards, including Fa’asuamaleaui, to improve their contributions after a second game’s underwhelming performance where he only managed nine carries and 58 run metres. Comparatively, Fa’asuamaleaui fared better in the first game with 121 run metres.
Parker, who played 19 State of Origin matches, praised Fa’asuamaleaui but expressed concern that he has yet to deliver his best. He asserted that the upcoming game needs to be a standout performance for the Gold Coast captain. Coach Billy Slater’s decision to include veteran Josh Papali’i, who has recently come out of retirement, aims to bolster Queensland’s forward strength, particularly in light of NSW’s dominance in overall run metres across the first two games.
The Maroons were outgained 1753 to 1425 in the first match and 1411 to 1253 in the second. Parker believes that the middle third of the field will determine the match’s outcome, urging all forwards to step up, including Reuben Cotter, Kurt Capewell, and Trent Loiero. He noted that bench players must also raise their intensity, particularly in relation to NSW’s Spencer Leniu, who has made an impact off the bench.
Queensland assistant coach Matt Ballin underscored the need for controlled aggression from players like Fa’asuamaleaui, focusing on effective tackles and timing hits during defensive phases. He noted that Papali’i’s experience and calming influence will be critical for the team. Former NSW captain Paul Gallen echoed this sentiment, asserting that Papali’i will be prepared to support his teammates, particularly in managing their formidable opponents.
As Fa’asuamaleaui and Papali’i prepare to face off in the front row, the rookie is reportedly eager to learn from the veteran, highlighting the teamwork aspect essential for success in this high-stakes environment. With significant pressure on the Queensland forwards and the importance of a strong collective performance, the team looks to turn around their fortunes in the upcoming decider.
