Tensions escalated between Thai and Cambodian soldiers in a disputed border region as both countries downgraded their diplomatic relations. The conflict, which erupted over allegations of territorial violations, saw soldiers exchanging gunfire near the ancient Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple located on the Thailand-Cambodia border.

Reports indicated that the clash prompted residents in Thailand to flee to safety in bunkers, with explosions heard during the altercation. Both nations accused each other of initiating hostilities. Cambodia announced on the morning of the incident that it was expelling the Thai ambassador and recalling its embassy staff from Bangkok. This decision followed Thailand’s closure of border crossings and the expulsion of the Cambodian ambassador, a response to a landmine explosion that had injured five Thai soldiers the day prior.

Relations have soured significantly since May, triggered by an armed confrontation that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. During the recent clash, Thai forces reported sighting armed Cambodian soldiers advancing towards their position, leading to a response of warning shouts before shots were fired.

In statements, Cambodia’s Defence Ministry contended that it acted in self-defence against what it described as an unprovoked incursion. Senate President Hun Sen urged citizens to remain calm and have faith in their government’s actions. Land mines have further complicated the situation, with allegations from Thai officials asserting that newly laid mines—of a type not used by their military—were found in areas previously agreed to be safe. Cambodia, however, dismissed these claims as baseless, highlighting the historical presence of unexploded ordnance in the region.

This latest flare-up is part of a long-standing history of border disputes, with both nations having experienced violent confrontations over territorial claims, especially concerning the Preah Vihear temple. The International Court of Justice awarded sovereignty of the temple to Cambodia in 1962, a ruling that remains a source of contention. Additional clashes have occurred over the years, with a notable incident in 2011 leading to casualties and further legal disputes, reinforcing the tension surrounding these border areas.

The ongoing nationalist sentiments and allegations of misconduct further exacerbate the already fragile relations, with Thailand’s Prime Minister facing scrutiny over her handling of the border dispute. As both sides navigate these complex territorial issues, the situation remains highly volatile, underscoring the pressing need for diplomatic engagement and resolution to prevent further escalations.
