Firefighters are actively combating several wildfires that pose a significant threat to communities in north-west Tasmania. An emergency warning has been issued for residents and visitors in Sandy Cape and nearby areas, advising them to seek shelter immediately. Authorities have characterised the fire conditions as uncontrollable and highly unpredictable.

The uncontrolled bushfire is rapidly approaching camping areas, endangering lives and potentially destroying homes. Residents are warned of thick smoke and embers that may ignite additional fires in the vicinity. Sandy Cape, a popular beach camping location, is directly affected by these flames.

A “watch and act” warning has also been issued for Pieman Heads and Corinna, encouraging local residents to remain vigilant and monitor the evolving situation. Emergency crews, comprising over 50 firefighters, aided by bulldozers and aircraft, are focused on tackling three major fires near Mount Donaldson, Yellowband Plain, and Canning Peak.

These blazes have already ravaged more than 41,000 hectares and have generated smoke visible from space. Conditions are expected to remain challenging with high fire danger forecasted, prompting the Tasmania Fire Service to implement containment strategies as the situation unfolds.
