This morning, four children were apprehended following a police pursuit across Sydney, which initiated in Edmondson Park and concluded at Bondi Junction. The police reportedly attempted to stop a Mazda CX-5 on the Hume Highway around 10:30 am, shortly before the car was allegedly stolen from a residence in Geelong’s Grovedale area the previous afternoon.
The pursuit briefly ensued on the M5 motorway but was abandoned for safety considerations. Nevertheless, police continued to track the vehicle from the air. The chase was resumed when the kids reportedly threw items, such as a headrest and a floor mat, at officers, prompting the pursuit to be called off again.
The vehicle was traced through various suburbs, moving from Alexandria to Bondi Junction via Centennial Park. Upon locating the car abandoned within the Bondi Junction bus interchange, the children made an attempted escape into the railway station. However, plain-clothes officers managed to spot them, leading to their arrest after a brief foot chase.
Among those arrested were two 14-year-old boys, a 12-year-old girl, and a 17-year-old girl, all of whom were taken to Surry Hills Police Station. Notably, two of the arresting officers were working their very first day as probationary constables. Detective Inspector Adam Solah mentioned that discussions were underway with Victoria Police regarding the possible extradition of the children back to Victoria. He also indicated that the youngsters are expected to face charges related to the stolen vehicle and associated offences committed in Victoria.
