A critical incident has been declared following a tragic car crash during a police pursuit in northern New South Wales, which resulted in the death of a teenager and left three others injured. The incident unfolded on Burroway Road, Narromine, around 11:15 PM last night, after police received reports of a robbery at a petrol station.
Four teenagers reportedly fled the scene in a stolen vehicle and were located approximately 15 kilometres east of Nyngan on the Mitchell Highway just after midnight. Authorities initiated a pursuit but briefly halted it before restarting the chase in Coolabah at around 12:45 AM.
Despite efforts to stop the vehicle using road spikes in Coolabah and Bourke, the car continued into Bourke where it ultimately crashed and rolled over on Weir Road at approximately 1:30 AM. Police promptly assisted the occupants of the car; however, a 17-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were transported to Bourke Hospital for treatment.
Among the injured, a 13-year-old remains in serious condition, a 16-year-old is in stable condition, and a 14-year-old was flown to Sydney Children’s Hospital, also in serious condition.
The Crash Investigation Unit is currently examining the scene of the incident, and a critical incident team is probing the circumstances surrounding the crash, with an independent review set to be conducted into the events.
