An 18-year-old male has been arrested following a brutal assault that resulted in a man’s hand being severed on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales. The incident occurred early yesterday morning at a residence on Toormina Place in Coffs Harbour, prompting police to respond around 6:45 am after receiving reports of the severe injury.
Upon arrival, paramedics located a 59-year-old man exhibiting the traumatic injury. He received immediate medical attention at the scene before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition. Two women, aged 58 and 80, were present at the home during the assault but thankfully did not sustain any injuries.
Investigations indicate that the assault was carried out by two men, one of whom is acquainted with the victim, before they fled the area. Later that evening, police in South Grafton noticed a vehicle without registration plates. When the driver failed to stop, a pursuit ensued, which concluded when the vehicle became bogged on a sporting field. The young man was apprehended at the scene.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, officers reportedly discovered a machete, which has been sent for forensic analysis. The 18-year-old has since been taken to Grafton Police Station, where he faces multiple charges, including aggravated break and enter, grievous bodily harm, and possession of a prohibited drug. He has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear in Grafton Local Court today.
