A serious incident unfolded at Avalon Airport in Geelong around 2.20 pm yesterday, leading to an emergency lockdown. A 17-year-old boy allegedly boarded Jetstar flight JQ 610, which was en route to Sydney, armed with a firearm. Fortunately, crew members and fellow passengers swiftly intervened and subdued him before the police arrived.

Approximately 160 passengers were on board at the time of the disturbance, but thankfully, no physical injuries were reported. Authorities located two bags and a vehicle linked to the teenager, prompting a response from the Bomb Response Unit to ensure safety.

Following the incident, the teenager, who resides in the Ballarat region, was interviewed by police detectives and charged with multiple offences such as firearm possession, making a bomb hoax, and endangering aircraft safety. He has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear in a children’s court in the near future.

Although Avalon Airport was temporarily closed during the crisis, operations resumed later that day. Anyone with further information regarding the incident is encouraged to reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or submit an online report.
