Australian captain Pat Cummins has announced the team for the first Test against the West Indies, featuring a mix of youth and experience. Sam Konstas, a 19-year-old batting prodigy, is set to open with Usman Khawaja, who is twice his age. Josh Inglis rejoins the team and will bat at No. 4, stepping in for the injured Steve Smith, having previously impressed with a century in his debut Test earlier this year against Sri Lanka.

Konstas’ inclusion comes at the expense of Marnus Labuschagne, while Cameron Green continues to occupy the No. 3 position, despite being unable to bowl just yet as he recovers from recent back surgery. Cummins expressed confidence in Green’s capabilities, describing him as a long-term option for that batting position, despite a rocky Test outing where he faced only five balls. “He’s hitting the ball well and we’re pleased with his progression,” Cummins remarked from Barbados.

Beau Webster retains his role, batting at No. 6. The first Test is scheduled to commence at midnight on Wednesday AEST. Cummins has chosen to stick with a pace-heavy attack, opting against including two specialist spinners, suggesting that the pitch may favour fast bowlers initially with potential spin later in the match.

The selected Australian team comprises Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wicketkeeper), Pat Cummins (captain), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, and Josh Hazlewood. They will face a West Indies line-up led by Kraigg Brathwaite, which includes players such as John Campbell, Roston Chase and Shai Hope.

Overall, this Test match presents an exciting opportunity for the young players in the Australian squad to showcase their talent on a significant stage.
