In a notable disruption for those who rely on access taxis, over 25% of Adelaide’s drivers are scheduled to strike tomorrow, coinciding with the city’s hosting of the world’s largest wheelchair rugby event. This industrial action is set to commence at 9am, significantly affecting accessibility for vulnerable passengers.

The South Australian government has expressed its disapproval regarding the timing of the strike, labelling it both “disappointing” and “poorly timed.” Drivers are protesting against deteriorating work conditions in the taxi industry, which they allege are forcing many professionals to leave their posts and contributing to longer wait times for passengers.

Operator Hugo Siu described the situation as increasingly dire: “It’s just getting worse and worse. That is why we have this stop-work meeting. Hopefully, the government will listen and establish fair earnings for our drivers.”

Disability advocate Belle Owen noted the strategic timing of the strike for garnering attention but expressed disappointment at its implications. “It’s unfortunate this action has fallen at that time,” she stated.

The government has shown willingness to engage in negotiations with the taxi drivers. Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison expressed her discontent over the strike, emphasising the importance of dialogue: “I’m really disappointed; I think this is the wrong time to do it. We want to keep talking with them, so I would express my disappointment with that.”

As a contingency plan, a loop service bus will be made available for wheelchair rugby participants to address potential transport challenges posed by the strike. Moreover, the industrial action could be called off if the transport minister agrees to meet with the drivers during their planned stop-work gathering at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

This unfolding situation highlights the tension within the industry and the potential impact on essential services during a significant event for the city.
