Beneath Sydney’s bustling CBD lies a hidden maze of abandoned railway tunnels, known as “ghost tunnels”. These tunnels, located beneath Hyde Park, have been dormant for over a century. Initially excavated in the 1920s, these tunnels were part of an ambitious plan by engineer John Bradfield to develop an expansive train network, a project that was ultimately shelved during the Great Depression.

During World War II, the tunnels found a new purpose as air raid shelters, yet they have never been used for their original intent—transporting passengers or trains. Matt Longland, CEO of Sydney Trains, confirmed this strange status, underscoring the tunnels’ untouched condition.

In an exciting development, the New South Wales government plans to open these tunnels to the public for guided tours later this year. This initiative aims to give visitors a rare glimpse into a part of Sydney’s history that remains largely unknown. Transport Minister John Graham expressed enthusiasm about the project, describing it as an extraordinary opportunity for the public to experience a significant aspect of their city that has been preserved for nearly a century.

To facilitate this public access, the government has invested $1 million into improving safety features, including light installations and necessary communication and evacuation systems. Small groups will be allowed into the tunnels, providing a controlled and secure environment for exploration.

The historical significance of the tunnels will be showcased through new projectors that are set to bring their rich history to life. Longland noted the project’s potential appeal, suggesting that if executed well, it could rival the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge as a must-see attraction in the city.

As visitors prepare for this unique historical journey into Sydney’s hidden underground, it promises to be a captivating experience for both locals and tourists alike, offering an exciting step back in time.
