Sydney’s Bins May Soon Need Permits as Authorities Tackle Poor Kerbside Etiquette

Residents of Sydney may soon need a permit to leave their bins on the kerb following a council initiative aimed at addressing poor waste management practices. This proposed regulation, introduced by Councillor Adam Worling during a recent council meeting, stems from concerns about the increasing number of bins left on the streets and footpaths long after collection day.

Worling highlighted the various issues caused by bins being left out, including unpleasant odours, hazards for pedestrians and drivers—particularly those with mobility challenges—and attracting vermin. Furthermore, these abandoned bins often become dumping grounds for others, leading to improper waste disposal and litter when they are knocked over.

The proposed solution involves a permit system restricting the length of time bins can be left out, allowing this only for residents without adequate space to store them. For example, individuals living in terrace houses lacking backyards could request permission to leave their bins on the street.

Additionally, Worling suggested implementing new labels for bins to specify whether residents have the authority to keep them outside and to indicate the corresponding address. He believes that providing clear guidelines will encourage responsible behaviour within the community.

The motion received unanimous support during the council meeting, with plans for an investigation into a structured response to tackle the waste-related issues, reflecting the city’s broader initiative to enhance waste management practices and address landfill saturation.

Harold Scruby, CEO of the Pedestrian Council of Australia, expressed his concerns over the safety risks bin placement poses to both pedestrians and drivers, while also highlighting other pressing issues in the city, such as food delivery riders on footpaths that have not been adequately addressed.

In summary, Sydney City Council’s consideration of a permit system for bin storage aims to enhance public safety and promote responsible waste disposal practices while tackling ongoing waste challenges in the city.
