Verinha and her three-year-old cavoodle, Zura, are regulars on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, often catching the 180 bus together. However, an incident last month disrupted their routine when a bus driver ordered them off the vehicle in a distressing manner. Verinha recounted her confusion when the driver shouted at her, insisting that Zura could not be on the bus, despite her being in a bag.

After this humiliating experience, Verinha returned home shaken and reported the incident to her husband, Graeme, who subsequently reached out to Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) for clarification. His frustration was palpable as he recounted the incident, saying, “that’s not right” and expressing concern for Verinha’s feelings. Graeme was informed that while dogs are permitted on buses, the ultimate decision rests with the driver, leaving them without a clear resolution for the incident.

According to TfNSW, dog owners must adhere to certain rules: the pet must be clean, well-behaved, must not occupy seats, and must be secured in a proper container. However, Transport for NSW’s coordinator-general, Howard Collins, noted that a standard shopping bag does not qualify as an appropriate container. He explained that even small dogs pose potential challenges in public spaces, raising concerns about the safety and comfort of all passengers.

Graeme has since urged the bus company to acknowledge what transpired, while TfNSW has confirmed they are investigating the driver’s decision. Collins acknowledged the complexities of such situations, recognising that not all bus drivers are dog enthusiasts and that some passengers might not feel comfortable sharing their space with animals.

He also made it clear that service and guide dogs have different regulations and are allowed on all public transport. Collins concluded by emphasising the need for understanding between drivers and passengers. As the investigation continues, the case raises important questions about public transport policies regarding pets and the discretion afforded to drivers when managing such circumstances.
