A retail worker from Sydney, Yvohn Ray Rosero, recently recounted a harrowing experience following a seemingly minor injury he sustained while working in a Burwood clothing store. The incident occurred when Rosero, an international student from the Philippines, accidentally cut his left index finger on a metal sign while arranging denim pants at the store.

Initially, Rosero dismissed the injury, stopping the bleeding with a tissue and washing the cut before continuing with his shift. However, the following morning, he noticed increasing stiffness in his finger and began to feel unwell, experiencing shivers after his shower. Despite his discomfort, Rosero reported to work with a fresh bandage, determined not to let his employers down.

A concerned colleague recognised his deteriorating condition and urged him to seek medical help. Following a lengthy wait at Westmead Hospital, he was finally examined, only to discover that the infection from his finger had rapidly progressed to his elbow. By this time, the infection had turned necrotic, and Rosero was swiftly admitted for treatment.

Doctors revealed that he was dealing with Necrotising Fasciitis—commonly known as flesh-eating bacteria—an aggressive infection that spreads rapidly and destroys tissue. Rosero was placed in the intensive care unit and underwent six surgeries to manage the infection, but ultimately, his index finger had to be amputated.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Rosero expressed gratitude for the medical team who cared for him, while stating, “I never thought that a small, very tiny wound could change my life forever.” He emphasised the importance of treating even the smallest injuries with care, urging friends and family to wash and disinfect any cuts or wounds diligently.

Now facing a month away from work to recuperate, Rosero has started an online fundraiser to assist with his medical expenses and living costs during his recovery. He has learned a valuable lesson about the potential dangers of seemingly minor injuries, highlighting a cautionary message for everyone.
