For over a week, residents in Prestons, located near Liverpool in Sydney’s south-west, have been contending with an overwhelming petrol odour permeating their homes. Concerned about potential health risks, locals have urged authorities to investigate the issue.
Michael Andjelkovic, a resident, has described how the noxious fumes have caused serious discomfort, manifesting as headaches while using his kitchen and bathroom. The noxious smell has been traced to the sewer system, making life unbearable for those living on Dalmeny Drive. Another resident, Julie, noted that the smell is particularly oppressive at night, impacting her family’s wellbeing and forcing them to seal their doors with duct tape in an effort to mitigate the fumes.
Additionally, six streets have reportedly been affected by the pervasive scent. Julie expressed her worries, especially for her children, who are facing respiratory problems due to the fumes. The local environment is also a concern, with Member for Leppington Nathan Hagarty highlighting the proximity to nearby water systems and playgrounds. He indicated a need for remediation and compensation for affected residents, particularly as some families have noticed a film of pollution on their swimming pools.
Investigation by Sydney Water has pinpointed a local petrol station on Camden Valley Way as the source of the problem. Following this identification, the petrol station has been closed. In a statement, Ampol confirmed that Sydney Water has severed the link between the service station and the sewer main.
Currently, measures are underway to test the integrity of fuel lines and underground tanks at the petrol station, with results expected next week. In the meantime, efforts to flush the affected sewer system have commenced, aiming to alleviate the distressing situation for residents.
