A contentious proposal regarding the Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks is currently under discussion. North Sydney Council is considering transitioning the traditionally free event into a ticketed one. This year, a family of four would face a cost of approximately $200 to secure a viewing spot at Blues Point Reserve.

The council plans to sell 8,000 tickets at a price of $50 each, aiming to generate $400,000 in revenue. However, the event’s transition to a ticketed format will incur an initial expenditure of $95,000. The council has indicated that the remaining $300,000 would be allocated to cover expenses such as waste management and crowd control associated with the event.

Local residents appear divided on this development. Some have expressed confusion and concern over the need for a fee, with one resident questioning the rationale behind the charge. Others have stated they would not attend if tickets were required. The council was set to make a decision on the proposed entry fee later that evening.
