Sydney experienced its coldest day in over a year this week, as temperatures dipped to a high of just 12.4 degrees, with daytime maximums barely reaching 11.6 degrees. Unfortunately, the Bureau of Meteorology has warned that the wet and chilly conditions will worsen, particularly affecting New South Wales (NSW) and parts of Queensland.

Senior Meteorologist Angus Hines indicated that the worst of the weather is yet to arrive. He noted that while there has been some rain in eastern Australia, a more significant weather event is anticipated as a low-pressure system develops off the coast, particularly impacting NSW. This system is expected to bring heavier rain, stronger winds, and rougher seas into the weekend.

Forecasters predict that rainfall will increase dramatically, with expectations of 20mm today and as much as 50mm tomorrow across NSW. While there are currently no severe weather warnings in effect, the Bureau may issue alerts as conditions deteriorate, especially with the approaching weather system set to exacerbate the wind, rain, and surf conditions from Saturday onwards.

Regions including the Hunter and Mid North Coast district are expected to be particularly affected by intense weather. Rainfall predictions suggest that areas from Port Macquarie to Sydney, reaching down to the South Coast and Illawarra, could see widespread precipitation of 50mm to 100mm, raising concerns about potential flash flooding in river catchments north of Sydney. There are also warnings about damaging winds and surf expected over the weekend.

The weather system is anticipated to clear by Sunday afternoon, with a forecast of “clearer” and “warmer” conditions for Monday. Meanwhile, Queensland experienced around 20mm of rain overnight, with additional wet weather forecast for its northern regions. Residents and visitors alike should brace for a challenging weather weekend ahead.
