Australian Olympic swimmer Brianna Throssell has announced her retirement from professional swimming after a distinguished career spanning nearly ten years. Throssell recently played a pivotal role in securing gold for Australia’s women’s 4x200m freestyle team at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where they also set a new Olympic record with a time of 7:30.07.

After her success in Paris, the 29-year-old chose not to pursue another Olympic cycle leading to the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Instead, she has embraced the opportunity to focus on life beyond the pool. With an impressive tally of 39 international medals, including four Olympic medals, Throssell’s achievements have largely come in relay events.

While she contemplated competing in upcoming events like the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore and the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, personal circumstances led Throssell to shift her focus. She is set to join Deloitte’s Mergers and Acquisitions team in Melbourne, where she expressed enthusiasm for applying her business degree in a professional setting.

Reflecting on her journey, Throssell stated, “It was time for a new chapter.” She fondly recalls the memories, friendships, and lessons learned throughout her swimming career, particularly the values of perseverance and teamwork. Her retirement marks the end of her time with the Dolphins, culminating in a memorable gold medal alongside teammates Mollie O’Callaghan, Lani Pallister, and Ariarne Titmus.

Throssell expressed immense gratitude towards her coaches and peers, affirming her desire to inspire the next generation of swimmers. Dolphins head coach Rohan Taylor highlighted her significant contributions to the team, noting her relentless pursuit of improvement and professionalism throughout her career.

Her legacy in the sport is characterized not only by her medal tally but also by the confidence she instilled in her teammates. As she steps away from competitive swimming, Throssell leaves behind a remarkable legacy and an enthusiasm for promoting swimming among future athletes.
