Swimmers, an Air Fryer, and a TV: ATO Exposes ‘Outrageous’ Tax Deduction Claims

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has highlighted some of the most absurd claims people made for tax deductions last year, demonstrating a widespread misunderstanding of what constitutes a legitimate work-related expense.

Tax deductions are intended for costs directly associated with one’s job, but not everyone seems to have grasped this principle. For example, one mechanic attempted to deduct the costs of household items, including an air fryer, microwave, two vacuum cleaners, a television, a gaming console, and various gaming accessories, classifying them as work-related. Unsurprisingly, his claim was rejected.

In another instance, a truck driver sought to claim a pair of swimmers on the grounds that he wanted to cool off during a hot stop on his route. Similarly, a fashion industry manager submitted a claim for $10,000 worth of designer clothing, asserting these were necessary for maintaining a professional appearance at work events. However, the ATO dismissed this request because the attire was deemed conventional, categorising it as personal rather than work-related.

Rob Thomson, the ATO’s Assistant Commissioner, labelled such requests as “outrageous” and insisted that taxpayers should be aware of the strict criteria required for claiming expenses. He noted that while some individuals attempt to push boundaries with unusual claims, the majority understand the need for clear connections between expenses and income-generating activities.

Thomson emphasised that exaggerated claims are not acceptable and reminded taxpayers that essential expenses should be substantiated with appropriate documentation, like receipts or invoices. He also pointed out that claims that wouldn’t pass the “pub test” are unlikely to meet ATO standards.

The ATO plans to concentrate on the common areas of error, such as work-related expenses and work-from-home claims, this coming year. Individuals seeking clarity on allowable deductions are encouraged to consult the ATO’s official website for comprehensive guidance. The ATO’s ongoing campaign aims to ensure that taxpayers are fully informed and that unnecessary errors can be avoided through proper understanding and diligence.
