A Melbourne shopkeeper is set to be reunited with two iconic plastic ice-cream cones that were stolen from her store and then listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace. The distinctive Peters cones have adorned the East Melbourne General Store since its opening in 1974 and were taken around 2 am on May 25.

To evade detection, the culprits managed to obscure the store’s security cameras during the theft. The cones, which hold significant sentimental value for the local community, were believed to have been sold online and were discovered at a Gisborne address, approximately 60 kilometres from the store.

Store owner Lisette Malatesta expressed her concerns, imagining the cones might end up in a collector’s “man cave,” appreciated only by a select few, rather than in the context of their community importance.

Following the theft, police acted on a tip-off and executed a search warrant in Templestowe Lower, leading to the arrest of a 50-year-old man who is expected to face charges. The iconic cones are scheduled to be returned to the East Melbourne General Store today, restoring a piece of local heritage to its rightful place.
