In a gripping encounter at the Sydney Cricket Ground, the Western Bulldogs triumphed over the Sydney Swans, casting doubt on the Swans’ chances for the finals. The match marked Marcus Bontempelli’s 250th game, with the Bulldogs securing a 16.9 (105) to 14.12 (96) victory, having held the lead for most of the contest.

Isaac Heeney and Bontempelli were at the centre of attention, showcasing their skills as elite midfielders. Heeney netted five goals, including four during a dynamic third quarter. However, it was young Bulldog Joel Freijah who emerged as a standout performer, scoring four goals of his own.

The Swans suffered a setback with Tom McCartin’s late withdrawal, leaving their defence lacking in height against the towering Sam Darcy, who made an impact early on with two goals despite being kept mostly in check by Lewis Melican. Sydney struggled for accuracy in the first half, registering 6.8 and falling behind by as much as 28 points at one stage.

The third quarter saw both teams exchanging goals, with Sydney even taking a brief lead, but the Bulldogs quickly regained their advantage. Unfortunately, the game was marred by poor turf conditions at the Paddington End, leading to players slipping, which commentator Jonathan Brown criticised.

In a tense fourth quarter, both teams fought hard for control. The Swans had a chance to come within a goal in the final moments, but Hayden McLean’s shot hit the post, symbolising a frustrating night for Sydney. After the match, Jason Dunstall remarked on the missed opportunities for the Swans, echoing the sentiment that not capitalising on chances cost them dearly.

Brown expressed confidence in the Bulldogs, suggesting they could contend for a top-four finish, citing their strong midfield and potent forward line featuring Darcy and Naughton. The Bulldogs’ crucial away win keeps them in contention for a finals spot, while the Swans may find themselves struggling, potentially three wins outside the eighth position by the end of the round, complicating their path to a finals berth as the season unfolds.

Errol Gulden was notable for the Swans, racking up 30 disposals, while ruckman Brodie Grundy contributed 43 hit-outs and 23 disposals. For the Bulldogs, Lachie Bramble delivered 28 possessions, and the duo of Naughton and Darcy combined for six goals, signifying a balanced team effort leading to their significant win.
