Helio Taiyang Matahari, a 63-year-old energy healer with a history of aliases, has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting two vulnerable women in Australia. The case was heard in Brisbane District Court, where Matahari was brought back for sentencing after fleeing to Thailand in December 2021, following his initial guilty plea to rape and sexual assault charges.
The court heard that Matahari abused his position of trust, first assaulting a woman he met through family connections in December 2017. The victim, then 20, sought his expertise for kinesiology treatment, only to be digitally assaulted under the pretense of therapy. During sentencing, Judge Deborah Richards highlighted the predatory nature of Matahari’s offences, noting how he took advantage of the woman’s discomfort.
The victim delivered a poignant impact statement, expressing the deep emotional scars left by the assault, stating it led to years of trauma and pain, stating she felt powerless and violated. Furthermore, a second victim came forward with similar allegations in 2018, leading to further charges against Matahari.
In 2021, Matahari initially pleaded guilty but later attempted to evade justice by fleeing Australia. This prompted additional charges of breaching bail. Upon his return to court, Judge Richards condemned his actions, asserting that genuine integrity cannot coexist with such behaviour. Despite his defence citing his work history and character references, the seriousness of his crimes overshadowed any positive attributes presented.
Ultimately, Matahari was sentenced to five years in prison and may be eligible for parole in September 2026. The court’s decision serves as a significant step towards accountability for victims of sexual assault.
