James Warburton has parted ways with Supercars, effective immediately, in what has been described as a mutual decision benefiting the organisation as it transitions into a new phase. This departure comes just a year after Warburton’s return to the role of chief executive last April, marking his second tenure after previously leading the company from 2013 to 2017.

In an official announcement, Barclay Nettlefold, the chair of Racing Australia Consolidated Enterprises Ltd (the parent company of Supercars), will take on the role of interim chief executive while a search for a permanent replacement is underway. Nettlefold expressed gratitude for Warburton’s dedication and contributions, highlighting his experience and enthusiasm for the sport.

Warburton expressed pride in the progress made during his brief time in the role, acknowledging the strong foundation within the Supercars community, which includes dedicated staff and passionate teams. He conveyed his best wishes for the future success of Supercars and its stakeholders.

Throughout his career, Warburton has held various positions, including a recent tenure as chief executive of Seven West Media from 2019 to 2023. His leadership decisions have not been without controversy; he faced criticism for restructuring the commentary team, which included the well-regarded duo of Mark Skaife and Neil Crompton, a move that Skaife referred to as a “captain’s pick.”

As Supercars currently enjoys a break in the racing calendar, with upcoming events scheduled in New Zealand, the organisation looks forward to maintaining its momentum and achieving continued success following Warburton’s unexpected exit.
