A superannuation fund with over one million members has raised concerns regarding potential breaches of personal and financial information following multiple break-ins at the Melbourne General Post Office. Australia Post has reported four incidents occurring between July 6 and July 17, during which intruders gained access to a mail sorting area three times before being deterred by heightened security on the fourth occasion.
Mercer Super has indicated that their post office box, along with Virgin Money Super’s, may have been compromised during these break-ins. The fund alerted its members through an online notice, suggesting that letters containing sensitive information might have been stolen. Customers who mailed correspondence to Mercer Super or Virgin Money Super from July 1 to 17 and have yet to receive a response or notice of transaction are urged to reach out to the respective funds.
Although no precise figure has been confirmed regarding the number of impacted members, Mercer Super clarified that the issue appears confined to individuals who utilised their Melbourne GPO box in July without receiving acknowledgment of their communications. At this stage, there is no evidence to suggest that any member’s superannuation account has been compromised, while Mercer Super has implemented enhanced security protocols to protect against further breaches.
Furthermore, the organisation has stated that there are no indications that any personal information has been leaked or sold following the incident. Australia Post has also reinforced security measures at the Bourke Street location and plans to transition to a purpose-built office in August. They have acknowledged the inconvenience caused to affected customers and confirmed that tracking letters is not possible, which complicates efforts to determine which specific items or boxes were targeted during the break-ins.
Victoria Police are currently investigating the situation, although no arrests have been made as of yet. Members of the public with any tips or information concerning the break-ins are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers to assist in the ongoing inquiry.
