Phil Gould has expressed concern that it is "way too early" for the Wests Tigers to contemplate a significant contract for young talent Lachlan Galvin, following reports about the club’s future intentions regarding the player. According to Danny Weidler from Nine, the Tigers are considering offering Galvin a lucrative five-year deal worth approximately $1 million annually to secure his commitment to the club.

Currently contracted until the end of 2027, Galvin is expected to draw substantial interest if he becomes available in the open market on November 1. Weidler mentioned on Nine’s 100% Footy that the Tigers are keen on negotiating a serious offer soon, suggesting they are prepared to start at a six-figure salary for Galvin, although official confirmations are lacking as of now.

Gould, however, is wary of the implications such a deal might have on the young player’s career. He highlighted the potential pressures and expectations that accompany significant financial deals, arguing that it may be premature to put Galvin in that position. Gould believes that young players should not have to shoulder such weight early on in their careers, emphasizing that both the club and the player’s management should carefully consider the young star’s development and well-being rather than rushing into a high-stakes contract too soon.

The Canterbury general manager stressed the importance of Galvin staying with the Tigers, pointing out that losing him would be a "tragedy." He urged the club to take proactive measures to retain the promising player, emphasizing the need for a solution to ensure Galvin’s future remains with the Tigers.

While several teams are in a position to potentially acquire Galvin if he chooses to leave, the Sydney Roosters have confirmed they will not pursue him due to their unwillingness to engage with his manager, Isaac Moses. The Tigers are reportedly aware of this stance, which may influence Galvin’s options should he enter the market.

Despite the well-deserved praise Galvin has received in his debut season, the conversation surrounding a massive pay deal raises concerns about the responsibilities and expectations that would be placed on him at such a young age. Gould’s apprehensions reflect a broader sentiment regarding the treatment of emerging talents in the league and the need to foster their growth without the burden of undue scrutiny.

In conclusion, while the Wests Tigers are eager to secure Lachlan Galvin for the long term, both Gould and other stakeholders believe it is crucial to approach this situation with caution, ensuring that the young star’s development is prioritised over immediate financial gains.
