Study Suggests Social Media is a ‘Breeding Ground for Medical Misinformation’

A recent study conducted by three Australian universities has revealed that influencers on TikTok and Instagram are disseminating misleading information regarding several medical tests. The research indicated that among the five most discussed tests—including full-body MRIs and multicancer early detection tests—87.1% of social media accounts highlighted their benefits, whereas only 14.7% acknowledged potential drawbacks.

Alarmingly, a mere 6.4% of the content referenced scientific evidence, and only 6% mentioned the risks of overdiagnosis or unnecessary treatment. The study also found that over half of the influencers encouraged viewers to undergo these tests, with 68% having financial links to the procedures.

Dr. Brooke Nickel from the University of Sydney pointed out that these tests are often marketed as essential early screenings, despite many being unnecessary, and the validity of their effectiveness is often questionable. This can result in healthy individuals receiving unwarranted diagnoses, leading to unnecessary treatments and potential mental health issues.

One notable example is the antimullerian hormone test, popularly dubbed the “egg timer test,” aimed at measuring fertility in women. Scientists have raised concerns about its reliability, suggesting that misleading results could push women into costly and unnecessary fertility treatments.

The findings indicate that social media is rife with health misinformation, which poses a significant public health crisis contributing to overdiagnosis and straining healthcare resources. Dr. Ray Moynihan from Bond University described social media as an “open sewer” for medical misinformation.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) President, Dr. Michael Wright, has advised Australians to refrain from relying on social media for health guidance, noting that such sources can be untrustworthy. He recommended consulting a qualified general practitioner who can provide tailored health advice and address individual concerns.

In response to the study, a TikTok spokesperson affirmed that harmful health information is banned on the platform and advised users to consult their GPs for health-related queries. They also encouraged reporting inappropriate content. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, did not comment on the issue before the publication of this report.

Overall, the research underscores the critical importance of obtaining comprehensive and accurate health information, as misleading content on social media can lead to harmful consequences for individuals and the broader healthcare system.
