Recent research has highlighted the significant gambling issue posed by poker machines, commonly known as pokies, in Australia. Findings from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare indicate that around one-third of adults engage with poker machines at least once annually, translating to approximately 6.6 million individuals when excluding Western Australia, where pokies are restricted outside of Perth Casino.

A report by The Australia Institute has revealed that these gamblers collectively lose an astounding $13 billion each year, averaging nearly $2,000 per person. However, it was noted that the typical amount a gambler can safely afford to lose is only $301 annually, a figure often overlooked due to the excessive amounts individuals are wagering.

Skye Predavec, the author of the analysis, remarked that poker machines are significantly profiting from problem gambling. The data underscores a troubling reality: a large portion of the revenue generated by these machines stems from individuals who gamble irresponsibly rather than from those who wager within their means.

The financial repercussions of excessive gambling can be devastating, affecting not only personal finances but also overall health and relationships. Predavec emphasised that the scale of losses incurred by Australians, many of whom cannot afford them, highlights an urgent need for policymakers to address the serious harm associated with the gambling industry.
