Severe winds are impacting parts of the Australian coast today, leading to delays and cancellations of flights departing from Sydney Airport. A significant low-pressure system is responsible for the harsh weather, bringing strong winds and rain to various states.

This morning, the winds have affected flight operations in New South Wales, with advisories in place from airport officials. They recommend that passengers check their flight status prior to heading to the airport, expressing gratitude for their understanding during these disruptions. Qantas is working to minimise delays, while Virgin has confirmed that some flights have been cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions.

Forecasts indicate that north-westerly winds will initially range from 20 to 30 km/h this morning, intensifying to 35 km/h by the afternoon. Particularly in south-eastern Sydney, winds could peak at 50 to 60 km/h, with damaging gusts potentially reaching up to 90 km/h. The temperature in Sydney is expected to vary from a high of 18 degrees to a low of 12 degrees today.

In addition to Sydney, severe wind warnings are in effect for the Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, and parts of several other regions, where winds could gust over 90 km/h. Areas such as Newcastle, Wollongong, and Goulburn are expected to feel the brunt of these conditions.

Strong winds are also affecting South Australia, particularly along the coast, including regions like Kangaroo Island and Goolwa. Following overnight rain, with some areas experiencing flooding, the State Emergency Service has responded to numerous calls for assistance due to fallen trees and flooding. The Adelaide Hills received significant rainfall, while the capital will endure strong winds alongside temperatures as low as 1 degree.

Victoria is similarly bracing for severe winds, particularly in the East Gippsland, North East, and other districts, where gusts could reach up to 90 km/h. Rainfall between 5 to 15 mm is expected, alongside heightened tides along the entire Victorian coastline.

This windy weather is forecasted to persist across Australia’s southern states today, with an improvement in conditions anticipated by tomorrow.
