The Melbourne Storm narrowly avoided an upset against the North Queensland Cowboys, despite fielding a significantly weakened team due to Origin call-ups. Key players such as Cameron Munster, Harry Grant, Xavier Coates, and others were absent as the Storm headed to Townsville, compounded by injuries to Ryan Papenhuyzen and Will Warbrick.
The Cowboys initially led the match 18-12 following a try from Scott Drinkwater in the 51st minute, increasing the pressure on the Storm, who were tipped as premiership favourites. However, the Storm quickly responded, with Nick Meaney scoring shortly after. This was followed by Meaney converting a penalty goal when Coen Hess was cited for a high shot, bringing their score to 20-18.
Meaney continued his impressive performance by adding another try in the 65th minute, extending the Storm’s lead to 26-18. Although Drinkwater scored a penalty goal late in the game, the Cowboys were unable to generate any further momentum to stage a comeback.
Commenting on the match, Cooper Cronk highlighted the significance of such victories for a team, particularly when many Origin players are sidelined. He noted that triumphs in challenging circumstances can strengthen team cohesion.
The Cowboys also dealt with notable absences, including Reuben Cotter and Jeremiah Nanai, who were on Origin duty, further evening the playing field. Earlier in the match, the Storm’s Eli Katoa opened the scoring, with Robert Derby of the Cowboys quickly equalising. Other first-half tries came from Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Jaxon Purdue, showcasing the Storm’s depth.
Looking ahead, the Storm are set to face the Knights next Saturday, while the Cowboys will take on the Bulldogs. The Storm’s resilience and ability to rally in the face of adversity were key factors in their hard-fought victory.
