Steve Smith has risen to the defence of Australian batting coach Michael Di Venuto after Ian Healy’s criticism regarding the team’s batting struggles during the first Test against the West Indies. Smith, who missed the initial match due to a finger injury, observed Australia’s victory from New York City while cautiously resuming batting practice.
The Australian top order faced significant challenges in Barbados, with Usman Khawaja being the only standout with a score of 47. Other key batsmen, including Sam Konstas, Cameron Green, and Josh Inglis, fell flat, prompting Healy to call for accountability among the national and state batting coaches on his SEN radio show. He voiced concerns over the lack of runs scored nationally, suggesting that the coaches should face scrutiny in light of the performance.
In response, Smith defended Di Venuto’s capabilities, stating he has brought substantial expertise to the role since he began coaching in mid-2021. Smith praised Di Venuto’s deep understanding of batting while emphasising that ultimately, it is the players who must perform on the field. He firmly rejected any criticism directed towards Di Venuto, highlighting the batting coach’s wealth of experience and the respect he garners from the players.
Di Venuto, who boasts over 25,000 first-class runs and has an extensive coaching background including a previous stint with the Australian team, has been noted for his hard work and extensive knowledge of the game.
As Smith prepares to return to the field for the second Test in Grenada, he reflects on his recent practice and the successful outcome of his recovery, reinforcing his commitment to the team’s performance moving forward.
