Steve Smith has declared his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket following Australia’s exit from the Champions Trophy. The 35-year-old cricketer, however, remains available for selection in Test and T20 formats.
Reflecting on his ODI career, Smith expressed his gratitude: “It has been a fantastic journey and I’ve enjoyed every single moment,” he noted. He highlighted the numerous unforgettable experiences and cherished memories, particularly emphasising the thrill of winning two World Cups and the wonderful teammates he’s had throughout his career.
Smith believes this is an appropriate moment for younger players to prepare for the upcoming 2027 World Cup, making it the right time for him to step back. He confirmed that Test cricket continues to be his main focus, expressing excitement for the forthcoming World Test Championship Final, a summer series against the West Indies, and then the highly anticipated Ashes series against England at home. He feels he has much to offer in the Test arena.
As one of cricket’s prominent figures, Smith’s decision marks a significant moment in his career, though he looks forward to the challenges ahead in other formats. More updates on his future endeavours are expected soon.
