Footy icon Malcolm Blight has expressed confidence that Ken Hinkley will see through his commitment to Port Adelaide, despite speculation regarding his potential exit as coach. The Power are on track to miss the finals this year, having previously announced that the coaching position would transfer from Hinkley to current assistant coach Josh Carr at season’s end.
Reports surfaced, particularly from Nine’s chief AFL reporter Tom Morris, suggesting that Hinkley might choose to leave early if the team falls out of finals contention. Morris remarked, “Ken Hinkley will walk away from Port Adelaide if and when he believes the club is out of contention,” indicating that the decision would be made with mutual agreement between Hinkley and the club.
However, Blight, a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame, recently dined with Hinkley and dismissed the notion of an imminent departure. “He’s in a really good space; in fact, he’s quite bubbly about the weekend (against GWS) because the club’s had a week off,” Blight shared during an appearance on SEN. He noted that Hinkley’s morale seemed boosted by the team’s break, which many believe could help instil a positive reaction from the players.
Blight remarked on Hinkley’s professionalism and dedication, emphasising that he has maintained his position for a solid 13 years due to his capabilities. “You don’t keep a job if you’re not good at it,” he said, reinforcing that Hinkley is focused on upcoming fixtures rather than potential speculation around his future.
As the team prepares for their upcoming clash with GWS, the Power currently sit 15th on the ladder, with just four wins to their name this season. With Hinkley at the helm until he deems otherwise, there appears to be a sense of stability despite the club’s current struggles.
The Power have made several changes, recalling players Esava Ratugolea, Kane Farrell, and Josh Sinn for their next game, aiming to improve their standing in the AFL. Overall, while uncertainty looms, Blight’s insights suggest that Hinkley remains committed to both his role and the team’s objectives for the season.
