Australia’s coach Andrew McDonald has reiterated that Marnus Labuschagne’s position in the squad remains secure despite his recent struggles with form. Labuschagne, who scored just 20 runs in the first Test against Sri Lanka and has not achieved a century since July 2023, raised eyebrows when he didn’t bat with the main group during a training session. Speculation grew that he might be dropped for the second Test in Galle.
However, McDonald dismissed these concerns, asserting his confidence in Labuschagne’s skills as a top-order batter. He noted that the batting lineup is likely to remain unchanged, highlighting the team’s effectiveness as a unit. McDonald also praised Labuschagne’s capability against spin, referencing his past century at the Galle ground.
Captain Steve Smith backed Labuschagne, expressing faith in his batting performance. Smith remarked that Labuschagne’s play had improved towards the end of the summer and that he looked comfortable in the first Test, only being dismissed by a well-spun delivery.
As the team prepares for the second Test, which kicks off Thursday afternoon (AEDT), both McDonald and Smith provide reassurances about Labuschagne’s ability to bounce back.
