An Australian transgender advocate, Teddy Cook, expressed strong opposition to US President Donald Trump’s plan to diminish transgender protections, stating that no policy could erase the global trans community. Cook highlighted that this decision would foster an even more hostile environment for transgender individuals in the United States, a situation that has already been incredibly challenging for them. He noted that the emboldened rhetoric is particularly harmful and reflects an ongoing struggle against discrimination.
Cook, who has been an advocate for over 20 years, emphasised that the threat of hostility is a constant for trans individuals. He acknowledged the efforts of trans advocates, both domestically and globally, to protect and uplift transgender experiences, yet lamented the serious issues still facing the community, including high rates of suicide.
Despite the challenges, Cook affirmed the resilience of trans individuals, stating that their identity and joy cannot be diminished by policies or speeches. “Trans people of all genders will continue being part of every community,” he declared, reminding others that they are not alone in their experiences. He concluded by reinforcing the importance of community and support for those affected by such discriminatory policies.
