ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys has pledged to address the NRL’s contract challenges, aiming to curb the trend of players leaving clubs prematurely. His commitment follows the ongoing dispute between the St George Illawarra Dragons and front-rower Francis Molo, who has been absent from training after his request for an early release was denied. Molo, despite having recently signed a two-year extension, is currently on leave and will not participate in the upcoming trial match.
In a recent interview, V’landys acknowledged the need for reform within the current system, stating, “A contract is a contract,” and emphasizing the importance of honouring agreements unless faced with unforeseen circumstances. He highlighted that issues often stem from agents rather than players and expressed his desire to collaborate with the RLPA to achieve a more balanced solution.
While V’landys did not comment on Molo’s specific case, he advocated for loyalty from players towards the clubs that support them financially. He noted that the ARLC is open to revisiting contract caps for dissatisfied players, an issue previously discussed five years ago, while also clarifying that they are sympathetic to players who need to relocate due to family or compassionate reasons.
